Genuine Goniatite Fossil – Devonian – Morocco – 5–6cm – 350 Million Years Old
A beautiful genuine Goniatite fossil from Morocco, North Africa, dating back to the Devonian Period, hundreds of millions of years ago.
These attractive fossils have been skilfully hand-carved and polished in Morocco to enhance their natural shape and bring out the beautiful spiral structure of the fossil.
Each specimen measures approximately 5–6cm across and makes a wonderful little display piece.
An ancient creature from prehistoric seas
Goniatites were fascinating marine creatures that lived in Earth's ancient oceans long before the dinosaurs appeared.
They belonged to a group of animals called ammonoids and were relatives of modern squid, octopuses and nautiluses.
Like the more familiar ammonites, goniatites possessed beautifully coiled shells divided into a series of internal chambers.
These chambers helped the living animal control its buoyancy as it moved through the prehistoric seas.
Goniatites first appeared during the Devonian Period, around 390 million years ago, and eventually became extinct at the end of the Permian Period, approximately 252 million years ago.
Beautifully prepared natural fossils
These specimens contain genuine ancient goniatite fossils that have been carefully carved and shaped to produce an attractive display.
The carving enhances the overall appearance of the fossil, while retaining the natural spiral form that makes these creatures so distinctive.
Each one is slightly different, with its own natural markings, colours and characteristics.
