AI WEIWEI SUNFLOWER SEED NECKLACE – TATE MODERN ART INSPIRED JEWELLERY
A genuinely unusual piece of contemporary art-related jewellery.
This necklace contains a hand-crafted porcelain sunflower seed produced in Jingdezhen, China, by the specialist makers involved in creating the porcelain seeds for Ai Weiwei’s famous Sunflower Seeds installation at Tate Modern.
Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds was created for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2010 and consisted of more than 100 million individually hand-crafted and painted porcelain sunflower seed husks. Around 1,600 artisans were involved in their production.
Each seed was individually formed and painted to resemble a real sunflower seed.
The porcelain seed used in this necklace measures approximately 1.5 cm long.
It is securely enclosed within a silver-plated spiral cage and supplied on an 18-inch solid sterling silver curb chain.
PRESENTATION
The necklace is supplied in a padded velvet-lined jewellery box with an outer gift box, making it an unusual gift for collectors, contemporary art enthusiasts and admirers of Ai Weiwei’s work.
IMPORTANT PROVENANCE INFORMATION
The porcelain seed was not removed from the Tate Modern installation and was not supplied by Tate.
It was sourced from the specialist Chinese ceramic producers associated with the manufacture of the porcelain sunflower seeds for the installation.
This jewellery has not been designed, produced, authorised or endorsed by Ai Weiwei or Tate.
