A Meteorite With an Incredible History
Campo del Cielo is one of the world's most famous iron meteorites.
It fell to Earth in what is now Argentina approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago, scattering enormous quantities of meteoritic iron across the landscape.
Classified as an octahedrite iron meteorite, Campo del Cielo consists mainly of iron and nickel.
Scientists believe that iron meteorites originate deep inside ancient asteroids and planetary building blocks that formed during the earliest days of our Solar System, around 4.5 billion years ago.
These objects were subsequently shattered by enormous collisions, releasing fragments of their metallic cores into space.
Just imagine – the tiny fragment in your necklace has travelled through space for billions of years before eventually arriving on Earth!
