Sometimes nature creates something so beautiful that it doesn't need improving.
After many years of selling natural pieces of Whitby Jet, I was regularly asked whether I made Whitby Jet jewellery. When I finally decided to create a necklace, I chose to do something a little different.
Rather than cutting and polishing the jet into an elaborate shape, I wanted to preserve its natural character. The piece you receive is a genuine, naturally sea-worn fragment of Whitby Jet, allowing you to appreciate both its beauty and its remarkable journey from ancient forest to windswept Yorkshire coastline.
To me, keeping the jet in its natural form makes it far more meaningful. It remains instantly recognisable as a rare natural material rather than simply another polished black gemstone.
Whitby Jet is a remarkable fossil, formed from the fossilised wood of ancient araucarian conifer trees that grew during the Jurassic Period around 180 million years ago. It is famous throughout the world and is found primarily along the dramatic coastline around Whitby in North Yorkshire, where it has been collected and crafted into jewellery for centuries.
Each naturally shaped piece is drilled and suspended from an 18-inch solid sterling silver curb chain.
Because every piece of Whitby Jet has been shaped naturally by the sea, no two necklaces are ever exactly alike. The necklace you receive will be very similar to the one shown, but will have its own unique shape and character.
Supplies of natural Whitby Jet are becoming increasingly limited, and I only have a small number of these necklaces available.
